I lived in China, in a small town in Hunan Province, from 2002 to 2003. From that base, I was able to travel fairly extensively in the south, but also to Beijing and, most interesting to me, to Xinjiang, which is home to the Uyghur minority. Later, in 2007, I would travel again throughout China, entering overland from Laos and exiting into Kyrgyzstan (via Yunnan, Beijing, Xi’an and Kashgar, among other adventures).
